Danalyn vs. AwesomeBar
I know I shouldn’t have...but I did...I “upgraded” my Firefox today.
I haven’t followed any of the RC threads, so I had no idea what to expect…
(oh...this is going to be a long one...)
When I first installed it, the first thing I noticed was the default theme.
Admittedly, this was much better than the past incarnations of the default skin. Even the “large” icons (not shown above) are smaller than the old icons, which is nice. I don’t like a toolbar that takes up 25% of my screen.
Then, I noticed the location bar…
At first glance, I have to admit, it looks pretty sleek...however, that was before I actually tried to type anything in it.
What. The. Fuck?
Now, before I continue, I feel the need to explain that my browser is set to clear my entire cache on exit. This includes temp files, cookies (with the exception of a few select cookies for certain blogs), and url history.
Imagine my dismay when I saw the sight above. Not only is it pulling results up from my bookmarks (bookmarks that I’d forgotten about, but at one point or another needed for specific issues), not only is it NOT searching for the last typed url that matches, but it’s DISPLAYING MY RESULTS ON TWO COMPLETELY REDUNDANT LINES!
Seriously. Are we that stupid that we can’t 1) tell which fucking url we’re trying to type in because we’re fucking typing it in, assholes, but we must also be blind because we need not one, but TWO lines to tell us the same fucking thing.
So, the first thing I do is open about:config to see what I can do to correct this…
browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped = true
Aah. Relief...at least, partially…
Firefox is recognizing only my previously typed urls...which is good...which is exactly how it should display...but it’s still on two lines.
After much scrolling through about:config, I realized I wasn’t going to get anywhere without editing the actual theme files.
FUCK.
Luckily, the most wonderful Seth Spitzer had written an extension for FF3 that takes care of this. Download the Oldbar extension here.
Finally.
All that work to do something that most normal browsers do by default...and by trying to be all “edgy” and “innovative”, the mozdev guys just made things annoying and more difficult than it’s really worth. I had half a mind to uninstall it completely...but I rely on the Web Developer extension far too much.
Final score:
Danalyn = 1
Firefox = 1 (for having necessary extensions that prevent me from uninstalling it completely)
Assholes.
